Read 2 reviews from the world's largest community for readers/5. Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn is the story of Christian Huxley, who we met first in Mythago Wood, and who wasn't really a very nice guy. This novel tells the story of how he was captured by Ryhope Wood (and hence became a bit of a ****)- through Guiwenneth, who also fascinated his father; and the larger-than-life figure of Kylhuk, whose quest he becomes embroiled in.5/5(4).

Although Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn has a greater reliance on plot than the earlier novels in the series, a vast proportion of the novel is still driven by the mysteries of the Wood. Instead, every sidetrack and flashback conspires to flesh out the spirit of Ryhope Wood, which has always towered above the exploits of the various Keetons, Bradleys or Huxleys who have made their way past Ryhope's outer defenses.

Neil Gaiman 's comic book series The Sandman Robert Holdstock 's novel Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn. In the Holdstock novel, the main character grapples with a traumatic event that has two very different manifestations, Gate of ivory true and one false.

Through the ivory gate come deceptive dreams, and through the horn gate come true dreams that will be fulfilled. These gates are first mentioned in the Odyssey, where Penelope describes a dream she has had in which she saw an eagle kill 20 geese (the implication being that Odysseus is the eagle and the geese are the suitors who are occupying his home).

Now, together with a band of crusaders from a world long gone, Christian and Guiwenneth become part of the unfolding stories both remembered and forgotten. They meet sorcerers in battle and giants who can travel miles in one step.

And they discover the meaning of the two gates, Ivory and Horn – one the lie, the other the : Robert Holdstock. Penelope wonders if this is a dream from the gate of ivory (meaning that it is insignificant) or the gate of horn (indicating that the dream is true or prophetic).

Most interesting is the contest that Penelope decides will choose her husband. Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn was published by Doubleday's Crime Club inbut he would not have another novel published for two decades.

He is best known for a series of mystery novels set on Martha's Vineyard where he and his family eventually. This book, Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn, tells Christian's story, before Steven gets involved - his first experiences in the wood and with Guiwenneth.

In this book, he is a very different person, and you see little of who he is by the time of Mythago Wood, only a matter of years later/5(4).
